Project Description
!!!!!SOLD!!!!! This is a miniature antique solid bronze muzzle loading cannon by an unknown maker. This exact cannon is featured on page 287 of the book “The Art of Miniature Firearms – Centuries of Craftsmanship”. 14 1/2″ long overall with a 9 5/16″ smoothbore barrel of .40 caliber. The breech of the barrel marked with the proof marks “V” (stamped), “P” (stamped with a raided P in a depressed oval), the an eagles head stamped. The barrel is shaped like a mid 1800’s Parrot rifle. The barrel is bored through to the touch hole, & since it is proofed, was meant to be fired. The left carriage rail stamped with the number “16”. There is an elevation adjustment knob on the underside of the barrel mounted in a swivel between the frame rails. The rear of the carriage has a rotating drag wheel. In the book mentioned above, the caption reads “Vintage miniature cannon built in the Springfield Arsenal c. 1795. Marked with the correct proof marks. Probably used in plotting topographical maps of battle”. I personally believe is was made in the mid 1800’s, but who knows? The proof marks do look to be from Springfield Armory. Neat to own a piece featured in the book! From the personal miniature collection of Joel Morrow. !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
