Project Description
Recently, I was asked by one of my customers here in Houston to come to his house & photograph his full size arms collection for insurance purposes. While there I was surprised to find a cased pair of Larry Smith 1/3 scale miniature Colt Paterson revolvers like I had never seen before. I’ve probably sold more Larry Smith Colt Paterson revolvers than anyone except Larry himself, maybe 50+ over the last 30 odd years, but never one like these! Both revolvers have the Ehlers loading levers & the cylinders are percussion, not 2mm pinfire, with two piece mother of pearl grips with two brass rivets!
I’m happy to report I now own this set & am able to offer it for sale!
This is a double cased set of 1/3 scale Colt Paterson revolvers with accessories by master miniature maker Larry Smith of Florida. Serial # 237 is 4 3/16″ long with a 2 15/32″ octagon barrel. Serial # 238 is 3 3/8″ long with a 1 5/8″ octagon barrel. Both barrels are .122 caliber. The frames & backstraps are silver plated brass. The front sights are yellow brass. The balance of the steel parts are finished in a beautiful high polish charcoal blue, with the exception of the hammers, which are finished in the white. Both revolvers barrels have barrel addresses which read “-L. H. SMITH-FLA U S A-” The barrels have wedge screws, which is normal on Larry’s later Colt Patersons. Both cylinders are percussion, not 2mm pinfire, which is very rare for a Larry Smith Paterson. The serial numbers 237 & 238 are stamped into the bottom of the backstraps, bottom front of the frames, bottom rear of the barrels, & the rear of the cylinders. Both revolvers have half & full cock. Beautiful two piece mother of pearl grips with two brass rivets. Accessories include a one spout silver plated brass powder flask which is a cartridge container and empty cartridge ejector, a brass cleaning/extractor rod with a jagged end, turned walnut handle, with a brass ferrule, a blued steel three leg bullet mold with turned walnut handles with brass ferrules that cast a single round ball & is marked “.12C” on the right side and “S” on the sprue cutter, two silver plated brass lift top cap tins with green with black print Eley labels, and a unique “T” shaped nipple wrench finished in the white. One tin has a silver plated top & a brass bottom, the brass bottom one marked “-L. H. SMITH”. One tin contains a quantity of lead balls, the other is empty. The nipple wrench looks to have been an after thought as there is no fitted recess in the case for it. Everything is housed in the original Larry Smith mahogany hinged top casing with slide latch and a rectangular German silver escutcheon with scalloped corners inlaid into the center of the top. The top escutcheon engraved “Colt 1840, Texas Paterson” in script in two lines. `The case interior is French fit and lined in a burgundy velour. The bottom of the case stamped “-L.H.-, SMITH, 237 – 238” in three lines. Near mint condition, with the expected tarnish to the silver items, some flaking of the silver on # 237, mostly on the trigger guard & butt strap areas, and a small blemish on the top of the barrel on 237, just forward of the barrel address. A super rare Larry Smith double cased set & the only Larry Smith Patersons I have ever seen or heard of with the Ehlers loading levers, and one of only a very few with mother of pearl grips!!! This set recently featured on pages 9 & 10 of the December 2023 issue of the Miniature Arms Journal! Price: $3,500.00.
