Project Description

This is a 1/2 scale 1906 Winchester pump or slide action .22 rimfire take down rifle made by George Wenzel of Washington State.  Fully functional, but non-firing.  17 11/16″ long overall with a 9 13/16″ round barrel of .12 caliber.  All machined steel with a blue finish, the final polish & bluing done by Doug Turnbull in New York.  The receiver done is a matt blue, the balance of the steel parts with a high polish blue.  Two piece walnut stock & forearm very finely checkered by Jim Corpe of Missouri.  The left side of the barrel hand engraved with the proper Winchester markings “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., NEW HAVENM CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JUNE 26, 88, DEC. 6, 92, NOV. 27, 06”, in two lines.  Then a little farther back “MOD. 1906.-“.  Then near the breech “22 SHORT, LONG, OR LONG RIFLE” in two lines.  The right side of the barrel near the breech engraved “M. S. BROWNING”.  The rear sight is screw mounted & engraved “PAT. JAN. 28, 1901”.  The front sight is dovetailed into the barrel.  The top tang engraved “MODEL 1906, -WINCHESTER-, TRADE MARK”, in three lines.  Then just beside & behind the rear tang screw it is engraved “134 2008, R. SAMPSON”.  The 134 standing for this being the 134th miniature Roger had engraved at that time.  The serial number “202545” engraved into the bottom front of the frame and the lower tang.  This piece was beautifully engraved & gold inlaid by master engraver Roger Sampson in 2008.  I called Roger to ask him about this piece & he told me that he spent 101 hours on the engraving & gold inlays.   The frame is very finely engraved in scrolls at the center & corners with a gold inlaid rabbit with an elaborate gold frame surround on the left side and a gold squirrel with a similar gold surround on the right side.  The frame, hammer, and the rear of the barrel with gold wire border inlays.  There is additional very fine scroll engraving on the top of the breech block and the bottom of the triggerguard.  The top front of the receiver is engraved with a bighorn sheep with inlaid gold wire crosshairs in a circle, the Brownell’s company logo.  The hard rubber buttplate is finely checkered with a round center engraved “WINCHESTER TRADE MARK””.  The end of the magazine tube and the hammer spur are checkered, the outside edge of the takedown screw is serrated.  One of a kind masterpiece!  Made & engraved especially for Frank Brownell.  Complete with the original Wenzek glass topped oak hinged top case with key lock, key not included.  The interior English fit & lined in a burgundy felt.  There was once a brass ID plate screwed to the interior bottom, but for some reason someone has removed it.  One of the attaching screws remains.  Doesn’t get much better than this, & would be impossible to duplicate today at twice my asking price!  Really needs to be seen “in hand” to appreciate the quality of this fine miniature Winchester!!!  George made five 1890 Winchesters, & I believe this is the only 1906 he ever made, using the same case, but without the 1890 graphics on the glass.  Near mint condition, but the case top does have a sliver of  wood missing on the right side.  Price:  $12,500.00.
