Project Description
!!!!!SOLD!!!!! This is a 1/2 scale Winchester Model 1876 “ONE OF ONE HUNDRED″ rifle made by master miniature maker Mike Barrett of Minnesota. 23 3/4″ long overall with a 13 1/2″ rifled octagon barrel of .22 caliber. The final polish was done by master gunsmith Terry Farrand of Minnesota. Beautiful high polish blue & case colored finish by Doug Turnbull of New York. The lettering, engraving, and gold bands hand engraved by master engraver Roger Sampson of Minnesota. The 48 lines to the inch checkering, in a point pattern, on the stock & forearm and stock finish done by master gun stock maker James Corpe. Checkering tools this fine were not available, so James made his own! The muzzle & breech ends of the barrel are very ornately engraved, with a single gold band inlaid at both breech & muzzle. The caliber marking, “45-75” is engraved into the bottom of the yellow brass cartridge lifter. Mike Barrett’s maker’s mark is stamped into the lower tang just ahead of the lever lock. The proper Winchester barrel address engraved into the top flat of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight. The long range tang sight with graduated markings on the left side. This rifle took seven years to complete, and only the very best craftsmen in their fields ever touched it. An absolutely spectacular piece, and one of the finest miniature rifles I have ever had the pleasure to offer for sale. This is a miniature of a later production gun with the barrel designation “ONE OF ONE HUNDRED″. Many people are aware of the 1 of 1000 rifles made famous by the movie Winchester 73 staring Jimmy Stewart, but few are aware that Winchester also made 1 of 100 rifles. Although Winchester made 136 1 of 1000 1873 rifles, and less than 10 1 of 100 rifles, only a handful of 1 1000 1876 rifles were made, and only 7 – 8 1 of 100 1876 rifles are known. Both the 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100 rifles were of superior accuracy than the standard production rifles, and were sold at a premium cost. For 1 of 1000 rifle, cost was $100.00 more than a standard rifle. For a 1 of 100, it was an additional $20.00. The clear lacquer finish applied by Turnbull to protect the case colors is starting to lift and craze a little on both sideplates, otherwise 99%+ condition. Formerly in the Nelson Perry and Dr. Joseph Murphy collections. !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
