Project Description

!!!!!SOLD!!!!!  This is a beautiful 1/2 scale Civil War Smith percussion carbine made by the late Mike Barrett of Minnesota.  This exact miniature featured on page 72 of the book “The Art of Miniature Firearms – Centuries of Craftsmanship.  19″ long overall with a 11 1/16” part octagon part round rifled barrel of .275 caliber.  All lettering laser engraved by me with a YAG laser years ago when I worked for Imperial Miniature Armory.  The left barrel flat near the receiver marked “L.F.R.”, which would be inspector’s acceptance marks.  The left front of the receiver marked vertically “SMITH’S PATENT, JUNE 28, 1857” in two lines.  The left rear top of the receiver marked “ADDRESS, POULTNEY & TRIMBLE, BALTIMORE, U.S.A.”.  The left rear bottom of the receiver marked “MANUFACTURED BY, AM. N. M. CH. N. WES., SPRINGFIELD, MASS.”.  The lower rear tang marked with Mike’s intertwined MJB logo.  Beautiful blue & case colored finish by Doug Turnbull Restorations in New York.  Fixed front sight, dovetailed ladder type long range rear sight.  The hammer has both half & full cock.  There is a brass button like projection at the upper front of the interior triggerguard.  By pushing this up, it releases the barrel to tilt down for loading & unloading.  Even though these Smith carbines are percussion, they are breech loaders, not muzzle loaders.  They used a couple types of fixed ammunition, the first being a lead ball & powder charge wrapped in brass foil & paper.  The second was a rubber cartridge case that was supposed to seal the breech by expanding upon firing, as these type percussion carbines were known to leak at the juncture of the barrel & breech, sometimes causing nasty burns to the forearm holding the barrel.  There were no primers in these cartridges & percussion caps were used for ignition.  Both cartridges are fairly rare today, especially the rubber cased ones.  Beautiful highly figured American walnut buttstock & forearm, as is very typical of Mike’s miniatures.  As I recall, Mike made three, maybe four of these, but this is the only one I know of that is properly lettered & finished.  Near mint condition, showing only the most minor signs of handling, I’d call it 99%.  I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Mike’s miniature rifles have all sold out in the last few months, & there is considerable interest in his miniatures since he passed away last year.  Stock # MCOR-01.  !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
