Project Description

!!!!!SOLD!!!!!  This is a Frederick Sell style boy’s contemporary flintlock Kentucky rifle made by L. Houston Harrison for his son Barry Lynn, reportedly for his 12th birthday in 1974.  41 1/8″ long overall with a 28 5/8″ browned octagon rifled barrel of .28 caliber.  I think is about 2/3 scale.  The top of the barrel engraved “L. H. Harrison for his son Barry Lynn” in fancy script.  Steel lock assembly finished in the white and engraved “L H H” in fancy script.  There is an extra hammer, and a piece to replace the frizzen, that when installed convert the rifle from flintlock to percussion.  A really ingenious system of conversion in my opinion!  Brass furniture.  Beautiful tiger striped maple one piece full length stock with four wedges holding the barrel.  Dovetailed front & rear sporting sights.  The stock is beautifully carved with carving at the rear of the rear ramrod thimble, along both sides of the ramrod channel, and on both sides of the buttstock.  There is a silver oval escutcheon inlet into the top of the wrist engraved “BLH” in fancy script, and an engraved multi point star inlet into the raised cheekpiece.  There is another  silver inlay just in front of the upper buttplate tang.  The buttplate has both upper & lower tangs.  The upper tang is faceted while the lower tang is engraved.  Beautiful engraved and pierced patchbox with the release button on the lower tang.  The lock has both full & half cock, & has a nice strong hammer spring.  The flint throws out a good shower of sparks when it strikes the frizzen.  The left sideplate is nicely engraved.  Accessories include a powder horn that is scrimshawed “Barry Harrison, His Horn 1974” along with some vine & floral details.  the priming horn is scrimshawed “L.H. HARRISON, HIS LITTLE HORN, JAN. OF 76; MAY YE ALWAYS PRIME, HER LOCK SO FINE, SO SHE;LL FIRE SHOTS OF TEN OR NINE”, along with a flintlock lock assembly, “LIBERTY”,  and a spread winged American eagle.  There is a small sword & scabbard attached to the strap of the priming horn, the tiny sword used as a vent pick.  Other accessories include a possibles bag, a stag handled hand made knife, an antler priming measure, a bullet starter, and a bullet holder.  Inside the possibles bag, but not shown are a wine skin, and some cloth ticking for use as bullet patches.  Everything you would need to fire this rifle is included except the black power & lead balls.  Near mint condition showing only the most minor of handling marks or wear.  This is an unbelievable rifle & accessories, obviously made by a very skilled gunsmith with love for his son.  Just view the 111 photos below to marvel at this beautiful piece!  Stock # MD-1.  !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
