Project Description
!!!!!SOLD!!!!! This is a 1/4 scale British Brown Bess Musket made by master miniature maker David Hick of England, probably back in the 1970’s – 1980’s. 15 5/8″ long overall with a 11 7/16″ round smoothbore barrel of .185 caliber. 19 7/8″ long overall with the bayonet attached. The bayonet measures 5 1/4″ long overall with a 4 1/4″ triangular fluted blade. Mechanically functional lock with both half & full cock. The barrel only bored about 1 1/2″ from the muzzle which is typical of most British makers. Machined and hand filed steel construction on the lock assembly, barrel, ramrod, trigger, & screws, the steel parts finished in the white. Brass furniture. “1020” stamped into the left rear of the barrel. The first two digits represent either the model number or the serial number, I can’t remember which. The last two digits represents the other. One piece walnut stock. Complete with the original mahogany hinged top case with flip latch. The interior bottom French fit and lined in a dark red felt. The middle front of the case interior bottom with a rectangular brass plaque engraved “J. M. HICK, SIDEWAYS, KILMINGTON COMMON, WARMINSTER WILTS” in four lines. The top also lined in dark red felt & with a block to hold the rifle & bayonet in place & a brass plaque near the center engraved “BRITISH, BROWN BESS MUSKET, C. 1776, 1/4 SCALE BY DAVID HICK”. The lid plaque looks to be a later addition, probably by previous owner Ralph Koebbeman. A great miniature Brown Bess in the difficult 1/4 scale by a top notch maker! Excellent condition. The steel showing some age patina but still clean with no pitting. The brass with a very nice dark aged patina. The interior lining is loose on the edges, and the outside of the case shows some minor storage & handling wear.
