Project Description
This is an antique 1/4 scale ivory stocked miquelet flintlock rifle, by an unknown maker circ 1720. 11 7/8″ long overall with a 7 3/8″ part octagon part round blued steel barrel with silver band at the transition & a slightly swelled muzzle. Steel barrel, ramrod, lock assembly, & trigger. The barrel & lockplate fire blued, the balance of the steel parts finished in the white. The hammer with both half & full cock. Engraved silver barrel bands, triggerguard, sideplate, & unusual partial buttplate. The buttplate looks to have been purposefully made that way. The top of the breech end of the barrel with five engraved gold inlays. Three look like crosses with a round top, one looks like a pineapple, & the other a rectangle with the letters “RA” engraved. There is also a gold band inlaid into the top three barrel flats at the breech. The breech end of the top three barrel flats and the barrel tang nicely engraved. One piece ivory stock with some nice carving behind the barrel tang & on the left rear of the stock. The stock has a very decided cast off to the right, I’m guessing for someone who was right handed but left eye dominant. There is some very attractive fluting on both sides of the buttstock. A real unusual feature is the ivory handled steel spear point plug bayonet. I had never seen or heard of such a thing & thought it as just an accessory dagger, but it is a known thing & the bayonet actually inserts into the bore of the barrel! Complete with a non-original but also antique black leather hinged top case with two flip latches, but the flip part of one is missing, The case interior bottom French fit & lined in blue felt. The case interior lid lined in a faded padded blue silk. There is a gold maker’s label in an oval marked “LOCKWOOD BROTHERS, PAMPA, SHEFFIELD” in three lines with what looks like a running ostrich in the center. I believe this case was originally for a cased carving set. Excellent condition, the barrel blue turning to a nice patina brown in places, but no rust or pitting anywhere. Excellent ivory stock & bayonet. The case shows considerable wear, mostly to the edges & corners. Beautiful workmanship & one of the most unusual antique miniatures I have ever seen! Probably made for someone of very high rank or status. I’m sure this is a one-of-a-kind piece. The small ivory rectangle piece shown in the first photo is not included as I finally figured out it does not go with this miniature. Stock # CK-327. Price: $8,500.00.
