This is an antique Italian miquelet flintlock carbine by an unknown maker probably dating to the mid 1700’s. 8 3/4″ long overall with a 3 5/8″ octagon smoothbore barrel of about .32 caliber. Beautifully carved ebony one piece stock. All the metal parts are steel. The piece is very ornately engraved. The stock has some damage that has been well repaired. The hammer has full cock only. There are traces of gold wash in the protected areas of the engraving on the barrel. There is some rust pitting on the barrel and triggerguard. I sold this piece several years ago, before it was recently repaired by Bob Urso. In doing some research, Bob found this exact piece was sold in a Greg Martin Auction in November 0f 2006 as lot # 312. It was described at that time as “From the Stephen L. Pistner Collection, Rare Antique Miniature Italian Miquelet Carbine, c.1750. 8mm, 3 5/8″ octagon barrel, the top scroll-engraved and gold washed. Ebony ramrod. Finely engraved miniature miquelet lock. Chisel-engraved triggerguard. Relief carved ebony stock. the top with delicately carved palm frond motifs, the sides with ribbed panels. Condition: Excellent with grey age patina with slight traces of gold wash remaining in protected areas. Wood with slight wear and patina. Estimate 8000 – 12000.” It sold for $8,000.00 in that auction! Mr. Pistner was a customer of ours back when I worked for Imperial Miniature Armory. A very rare and early piece. Miquelet flintlocks are very rarely seen for sale, especially one in miniature! This exact miniature featured in an article by Bob Urso in Southeastern Antiquing and Collecting Magazine in March of 2015, & I will include a copy of the magazine with the purchase. Stock # ME-1. Price: $2,500.00.
