Project Description

!!!!!SOLD!!!!!  This is an antique late 16th century to early 17th century (1570’s to early 1600’s) northern Iran or southern Caucasus wheellock carbine by an unknown maker.  12 11/16″ long overall with a 8 3/8″  steel barrel that measures .40 caliber at the muzzle.  The barrel is drilled through to the touch hole.  Brass triggerguard, ramrod thimbles, & buttplate.  There is a small threaded part protruding out of the buttplate, don’t know what that’s about!  This thing is really ornate with a carved ivory or bone nose cap at the muzzle, and an ivory or bone rearward sliding patch box door on the right side of the butt.  The one piece walnut stock has scores of mother of pearl inlays, plain & braided brass wire inlays, and brass tack or nail inlays.  The wheellock assembly has the typical sliding pan cover.  The lockplate with carved brass overlays of a tiger & flower with leaves.  Ebony ramrod.  There are hundreds of hours of work spent on the ornamentation of this piece!  Very fine condition considering it’s age.  The steel with a steel gray patina with some brown staining & minor pitting.  The stock showing age darkening, some minor bumps & bruises, and a couple cracked pearl inlays.    The brass parts with a patina that only comes with great age.  !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
