Project Description
!!!!!SOLD!!!!! This is an antique miniature German flintlock rifle by an unknown maker, circa about 1680. 8 7/8″ long overall with a 5 9/32″ smoothbore octagon barrel of about .236 caliber. The steel barrel, lock assembly, trigger, and screws are finished in the white. Yellow brass furniture and front sight. The rear sight is a notch at the front of the barrel tang. Typical of many antique miniatures that were made to be shot, this one has the trigger passing through the triggerguard so that a person with normal sized hands could shoot it. The one piece walnut stock is beautifully and ornately carved with scrolls at the muzzle that flow into flutes along the sides of the barrel, that then flow into a carved scalloped area just ahead of the triggerguard. There is a carved leaf on each side of the stock just ahead of the lockplate and sideplate. The wrist is checkered, and there are more leaf carvings at the rear of the barrel tang and the rear of the lockplate. The most interesting thing is the beautiful very high relief carved dog’s head on the bottom of the buttstock just at the rear of the checkering. Excellent condition, considering it’s age. There is some minor staining of the steel parts with a few scattered areas of very minor pitting. The brass parts show an untouched beautiful aged patina. The stock is missing a small piece of wood where the front of the lock has a tab to hold it in place, other than that the stock just has some normal minor bumps & scratches. A truly beautiful and historic piece from a time period when very very few miniature firearms were made. Stock # LG-4. !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
