Project Description

!!!!!SOLD!!!!!  Alvin A. White is probably best known for his masterful engraving of Colt firearms, however, those only display a small fraction of his artistic talent. White, who was Colt’s master engraver for 38 years, is also highly regarded for his scrimshaw, sculpture, gun making, jewelry making, carving, and restoration. Thus, in many ways, listing Mr. White as only a Master Engraver is selling his artistic talent short. This handmade miniature musket is an excellent example of a combination of many of these talents. 9 1/8″ long overall with a 5 1/4″ smoothbore barrel that is drilled through to the touch hole.  The three-stage cannon barrel is brass and lightly engraved at the breech along with White’s “A.W.” signature.  The breech end of the barrel is octagon, then steps down to round, then another step down to a smaller diameter, ending with a flared cannon muzzle. The lock assembly is steel finished in the white, with some nice floral engraving on the lockplate and hammer.  The hammer has both half & full cock.  The trigger guard, sculpted sideplate, ramrod pipes, top of the wrist escutcheon, and buttplate are silver, and also lightly engraved with floral scroll. The stock is full length walnut with a fluted comb.  This miniature musket is pictured, along with a couple of White’s other masterful pieces, on page 296 of “Steel Canvas The Art of American Arms” by Wilson. Provenance: The Alvin White Collection.  Very fine condition as made by Master Artisan Alvin A. White, showing mostly an attractive antique brass finish on the barrel with some light spotting, some minor tarnish to the silver furniture, the remaining metal surfaces showing their bright polished finish. The wood is also very fine with only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent.  A true piece of American art & history by one of the premier engravers and artist of the 20th century!  !!!!!SOLD!!!!!
