Osterman-No-1-Bowie-1.JPG

!!!!!Note, 12 New Photos and expanded more detailed text!!!!!

This is a beautiful 1/3 scale miniature Bowie knife by master miniature maker Daniel Osterman.  This is known as the number 1 Bowie.  The full size original knife featured on pages 34 and 35 of The Antique Bowie knife Book by Adams, Voyles, and Moss.  The following quoted from the book:

"Speculators can have a field day with this one.  First the description: This very old knife is silver mounted with ropework filing on the tang, a walnut handle, and is 18 1/2" long overall.  The blade is a long 13 1/2 inches and 1 3/4 inches wide.  The unusual thing about this Bowie is how the handle turns at a slight angle to the blade.  Held with the edge up, as was often done by frontier knife fighters, the blade is level with an extended arm.  The ricasso has silver layering, and in it's day it must have been a fancy looking thing.  As for the speculation, we can start by saying it feels as good in the hand as does any knife in this book, and some of the speculation is prompted by the silver escutcheon marked with a very oldengraving of the words "Bowie No. 1."  Was the knife so engraved by the makerso the owner would know the knife was a Bowie?  Or was the Jim Bowie innovation an unusual angle to the blade, one that was lost over the years?  And what if...?  Here's one of the great pleasures of Bowie knife collecting -- you get to fill in the rest.  Bob Berryman Collection"

The knife measures 6 1/4" long overall with a 4 13/32" drop point blade.  The handle is burl walnut and there is no guard.  It is exactly as described in the above desription, just 1/3 the size.  Dan did a masterful job of re-creating this Bowie in miniature.  The left side of the silver layered ricasso engraved D.E.O.+.  Complete with the original Osterman hinged top walnut casing, French fit, and lined in green felt.  Dan even made the nickel silver hinges!  The outer lid inlaid with an oval German silver escutcheon.  A true masterpiece and really must be seen in hand to fully appreciate.  Dan passed away several years and his work is really starting to climb in value.

Anton-Wenger-Bowie-knife-1.JPG

This is a 1/3 scale miniature Bowie knife made by Anton Wingen, Jr. in Solingen, Germany.  4 47/64" long overall with a 2 3/16 stainless steel blade.  The Blade stamped on the left side "ANTON WINGEN Jr, SOLINGEN, GERMANY" in two lines.  Slightly behind and at 90 degrees it is stamped "ROSTFREI", which I believe is German for stainless steel, on the same side.  Beautiful ivory handle showing a very pleasing yellowish aged patina, and very nice grain.  The right side of the handle scrimshaw carved with the likeness of a standing stag or elk with a sitting cow on a landscape scene with a barren tree.  The work is signed, but I can not read the name and am not familiar with the artist.  It shows obvious signs of age, but is in almost mint condition showing only the most minor signs of handling.  Solingen is known for making some of the finest knife blades in the world, and this is no doubt on of them!
